A Message From Dean Gorman

Dear Rice Parents and Families,

The spring semester is off to a great start, and your student is anticipating a well-earned spring break. During a recent visit to our Paris campus, I was reminded of the amazing study abroad opportunities available to Owls and the lasting impact they can have — and why I hope all our students will consider engaging in an abroad experience while at Rice.

Studying abroad offers numerous academic benefits, from language immersion opportunities to earning course credits, but its true value extends far beyond the classroom. Travel exposes students to diverse cultures and perspectives, fostering new ways of thinking and problem-solving. Most importantly, it teaches them that learning thrives in challenge and the willingness to embrace new experiences.

Rice offers a variety of study abroad opportunities, including short-term, faculty-led trips and programs like OEDK iSEED or Rice in Country. Committed to making these experiences accessible to all, Rice also provides specialized programs, such as Moody Global Fellows, to support students who need financial assistance. And don’t forget about our Rice Global Paris summer program, which offers Rice classes taught by Rice instructors each summer.

One of the easiest ways for your student to start their international journey is through the Office of Study Abroad, which offers roughly 250 long-term study abroad options across 60 countries. Their dedicated team of advisors supports students every step of the way, from choosing the right program to securing financial aid and preparing for their return home. The office also hosts workshops and events throughout the semester, with details available on their OwlNest page.

If your student is interested in studying abroad, encourage them to explore the Office of Study Abroad — a valuable resource designed to help them make the most of these opportunities.

Wishing your Owls a restful spring break and strong finish to the semester!

Bridget Gorman, Dean of Undergraduates
